The National Peace Council has condemned recent clashes by members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“The Council unreservedly condemns such acts of violence, provocation and impunity,” Chairman of the Peace Council stated. Members of the two parties have in recent times clashed in several parts in the country with the recent one happening at New Juaben North in the Eastern Region.
Addressing the press on Monday, Chairman of National Peace Council, Most. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, said such incidents cast “a slur on Ghana’s hard earned democratic credentials” and further called on political parties to call their members to order.
“The recent skirmishes between supporters of the NDC and the NPP cast a slur on Ghana’s hard earned democratic credentials and image. This act should awaken all Ghanaians to the reality that electoral violence is possible in our country.
The current level and spate of violent clashes between the NDC and the NPP have the potential to foul the political atmosphere during and even after the elections,” he added.
“The NPC is deeply concerned about the continuing violent confrontations between supporters of the NDC and NPP. The Council calls on the supporters of the parties in question to exercise caution and circumspection, as they embark on their legitimate rights to promote the virtues of their parties.
It is pertinent to note that Ghana is bigger than any political party and that political hooliganism and violence have never been a legitimate mechanism for ascension to political power in any part of the world,” Rev. Asante added.
Meanwhile, the Council will on Wednesday, 23 November 2016, will convene the 2nd High Level Meeting of National Leaders on Strengthening Ghana’s Democratic Stability, Peace and Unity at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana.
The Council organized the first meeting in the 2012 elections, where all presidential candidates pledged to uphold peace and accept the outcome of the election.
Surge in NDC/ NPP clashes
The Police in the Eastern Region are currently on a manhunt for some thugs, believed to be supporters of the NDC and NPP who were involved in violent clashes on Sunday.
Members of the two parties clashed during a separate health walks organized by the two parties in the New Juaben North constituency. It is unclear what triggered the clashes; but several properties were destroyed in the process. Such cases have been recurring in recent times.
Members of the two parties clashed in front of the residence of the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo at Nima in Accra. Similar cases have also been recorded in Wulensi, Odododiodoo, Ajumako among other places. However, in all such instances, the Police were unable to arrest perpetrators face the law for their actions.

where were you people, you call yourselves church council my foot. This council should be dissolved because is of no use to Ghanaians. They are ***barred word*** and don't speak the same language as Ghanaians. They have their own agenda
PEACE COUNCIL, DO MORE. MERE CONDEMNATION SHALL ALWAYS ENCOURAGE PERPETRATORS OF THE VIOLENCE TO DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN. AFTER ALL THEY WOULD NOT BE THE ONLY ONE TO BE CONDEMNED. BOTH THE STARTERS AND RESPONDENTS WILL BE CONDEMNED. PLEASE, DO MORE TO FIND OUT THE EXACT CAUSES OF THE VIOLENCE TO SUGGEST MEASURES TO AVOID IT REPETITIONS. POP
MY PROBLEM WITH THE PEACE COUNCIL headed by Rev Prof. Asante Antwi has to do with their INERTIA and INACTION or LUKEWARM REACTION TO OMISSIONS AND COMMISSIONS that has the tendency for riprisals from the agrieved or offended PARTY. May I ask how long has the brutalities of Collins Dauda's brother in the Kukuom, Asunafo South and Ahafo Anos been reported? Till date have they been bold to call and suggest the call to order of the Presiodent, his minister and Brother in plain unequivocal terms? What about the Nana Addo's House attack and the Agbogbloshie, Odododiodio attacks. You cannot callthe president to ORDER and the police to be up and doing, But Osofo Bempah's invitation to police headquaters for interogation has your council's tacit endorsement. INSTEAD OF CALLING THE PRESIDENT TO ORDER OVER THE MANY UNPRESIDENTIAL NAME CALLING, REMARKS EXTREME ETHNOCENTRICSM AND SUBTLE INSULTS directed at the person of his closest, YOU WILL SHAMEFULLY LAMP THE OFFENDED and OFFENDER for chastisement and caution. WHAT A SHAMEFUL SELECTIVE ADMONITION...
I don't see why this council is trying hard to ensure peace in Ghana by using hypocritical means? I don't see that council to be just. For me, it does not exist. I'd rather use just means to achieve peace. Until it realizes that peace is a product of justice, they will be unsuccessful in their quest for peace.
Have you heard the President's latest ethnocentric comments? Peace Council indeed hears nothing, sees nothing and in fact says nothing just to embellish the truth.
I am very disappointed in the Peace Council. For once be bold as Jesus was. Are you afraid to mention John Mahama's name. Where is NPP being aligned to this call by the President. The President and his Party has consistently served Ghanaians with a consistent effort to divide Ghana along tribal lines and you cannot tell him to stop it. Why are you so fast in rushing to hack Bawumia, Osafo Marfo and Dzifa Ativor for ***barred word*** comments when you cannot do same to John Mahama, his Chief of Staff,Deputy Chief of Staff and general secretary who should know better. Where is the boldness that Jesus exuded during his days on earth.
This uzzelessz and selective Peace Council should also tell the Stzcup1d President Mahama to stop the tribal politics which is more deadly than these petty fights.
