Head of the United States’ delegation to Ghana’s Presidential inauguration, Madam Linda Thomas-Greenfield, says Ghana should recognise and honour the extraordinary work of the Electoral Commissioner, Mrs Charlotte Osei.
She told the GNA in an interview that although the Commissioner has come under serious pressure during the electoral process, she had remained strong and ensured a successful and transparent election.
Madam Thomas-Greenfield, US Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of African Affairs, who led a team of election observers to Ghana during the elections and also represented President Barack Obama at the Inauguration of President Akufo-Addo, commended Mrs Osei for fortitude under pressure.
“She was battered by both parties because she was doing the right thing and she stayed strong and stood against tremendous pressure from all sides and I think Ghana ought to commend her” Madam Thomas-Greenfield said.
She said the Commissioner carried what was an almost impossible task of ensuring a free and transparent election, and did it with tremendous professionalism, and thus deserved accolades for her efforts.
“We all pressured her, every single one of us. We all called her: Charlotte, what’s going on? And she stood strong. I think she deserves to be recognised by your country,” she stated.
The Electoral Commissioner was heavily criticised for some of the decisions she took in the build-up to and during the electoral process, but was able to organise and deliver a successful election.
“I think Charlotte did prove everybody wrong. She proved that, not just because she is a woman, but because she is a professional, that she could do the job. I don’t think gender matters in this case. However I do think that we should work harder, to provide opportunities for women to show their stuff at these senior levels” she reiterated.
She said we will soon get to a point where it will have women as President and Vice President, seeing as the country has some amazing professionals and in light of the fact that more and more women were stepping up to positions of authority across Africa.
“I do believe that women rule differently than men, that women are more sensitive to the needs of people. Africa, as we saw with President Sirleaf in Liberia, is ready for another female president.”

Glad someone recognizes Mrs. Osei's difficult position. Needless yo say its a thankless job. Both the NPP supporters and the NDC supporters feel she rigged for the other side. That's good because it goes to show she did her job without favor to any side. She's a punch bag for the politicians on bith sides and their supporters. Her critics tried to mar her efforts with rumors and innuendos but they failed. She was resolute and unswerving. Thank you, Madam Osei! You proved you work for Ghana, and not just a section of the country.
I strongly disagree with the Envoy. Charlotte Osei tried and failed to rig the elections in favour of NDC and only abandoned it when she realised the margin of victory was so huge to tamper with. I am saying this for I still do not understand her motive for stating the voter turnout at 49% hours before she declared the results. Also the fact that her original plan to do a recount if the results were close point to a sinister agenda. I do not trust her one bit.
For what?thanks be to the media, political parties expecialy npp, police and Ghanaians as whole, electoral commission was box in the corner she could not execute her plans, stop praising her after telling us 56.000 people used nhis cards to register.PLEASE........
The EC Chairperson was never bastardized by the two main parties. It was the NPP who butchered her left right and center. It was the NPP who stole the election through the help of the international community. The only person that Ghanaians must thank is John Mahama who has kept quite up until now although he knows the elections was stolen. The biggest hypocritess in Ghana is JJ Rawlings who wanted Atta Mills to riot in 2004 because NPP stole the election but is now supporting the NPP to steal the mandate of Ghanaians. Ghana will do well but NPP leaders will and are going to suffer big time for stealing the mandate of Ghanaians. ItThe calamity on them started the moment the inauguration took place. Wait and see.
The EC boss, Charlotte Osei, 'remained strong' but whopping unfair. She never needed, ever to kowtow a debased, corrupting ruling political party. That was most unfair. We have had to question Charlotte Osei's credentials to that all important national assignment. It never should have happened what did happen. Ghana needs healthy growth even in the face of such low despicable performance as the NDC has put up. This is a most serious national issue that calls for thrashing out.
For what? Not one constituency result over three day!
Please Madam, Npp was vigilant at this time. This time we are not going to give chances for this armed robbery group to take chances. NO MORE RIGGING AGAIN AND FOREVER.National identification cards is going to be implemented fully by the end of this year. wew will know the population of Ghana. No more Togolese, Baukina and Ivory Coast voters.
