President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inaugurated a 30-member Planning Committee to spearhead activities toward the country’s 60th anniversary.
The Committee which would be chaired by Ken Amankwah has representatives from strategic state institutions including the army and police service.
Outdooring members of the anniversary committee at the Flagstaff House on Thursday, 26 January, Mr Akufo-Addo said;
"The celebration of our 60th anniversary should be modest, it should take into account our financial circumstances but it also should be elegant and appropriate, we should live in a good feeling about ourselves.”
He added that "On such an occasion, it is fitting and proper that the nation recognises and commemorates the work of some of its citizens – those who have distinguished themselves, those who have contributed to bringing us to where we are today, and a fitting honour accorded to those to whom honour is due.
“No matter the diversity of opinions and the diversity of origins, we are all fully paid-up members of the Ghana project and these celebrations should advance that sense of unity and oneness among us.
“So I have decided that we should have the Planning Committee to begin work today, 26th of January, towards the anniversary, which is some six or seven weeks away, a very short period of time.”
Among the terms of reference given them by the President include working out activities for the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the country.
March 6, 2017 will mark the 60th Anniversary of Ghana's independence from British colonial rule in 1957.

I AM SURPRISED AT THE NDC ASKING WHY WE WILL USE RESOURCES TO CELEBRATE GHANA @60. MEANWHILE THEY HAD ORDERED STUFF TO USE FOR THE CELEBRATION IF THEY HAD WON. HYPOCRASY AT ITS HIGHEST
@ Poor NDC Will be a remuneration in any form to the members? If there is, then we must be concern about it. I will repeat this that l am disappointed to some extent.
Thirty member committee represents incompetence. Can't ten pple do this work. Hmmm African leaders, no difference
no ewe or northern name
THIS MEANS MAHAMA LEFT BEHIND PLENTY MONEY!! U HAVE A LOT OF FACTORIES TO BUILD N U WANT TO CHOP MONEY ON GHANA@ 60??THE SPECIAL ANIVERSARIES R 1, 10,25,50,75,100, ETC NOT 60YRS.
I NEVER KNEW THE PRESIDENT IS SOOO HANDSOME.
Duke ofori-atta, michael ofri-atta.. some family business..innit
Mr. President, you have forgotten of a representative of Ministry of Health ooh. Very important please
You guys must be very very sad and disappointed with your gargantuan loss. Aah you criticize Prez Nana Addo as if he has ruled two years. He's been in office just under 20 days. Mahama ruled with his brothers. This is just a committee let us think. Protecting the nations purse does not mean zero expenditure. When he sets up Zongo Fund you say bueii. He sets up a fund to celebrate 60 years you say bueii he can use it for toilets. The Zongo fund etc will solve that problem.
I thought nana addo is so pious that he will find this celebration unnecessary and use the money to build the first factory in my district. I am disappointed.
