The Minority in parliament has rejected the nomination of the Tourism, Arts and Culture minister-designate, Catherine Afeku over her failure to do National Service.
According to the minority, their rejection of Mrs. Afeku’s nomination was a matter of principle.
The minority believe it would be hypocritical to pass the Tourism, Arts and Culture minister-designate after rejecting the nomination of the Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister, Otiko Afisa Djaba on similar ground.
Even though the appointment Committee report is not ready yet, Alhassan said he gathered that “all the others will be approved by consensus but for Catherine Afeku,” if nothing changes before the report was ready.
Mrs. Afeku told the Appointments Committee of Parliament during her vetting that she did not do national service as required by law.
According to her, she could not honour her constitutional obligation because she was living outside the country at the time she completed her tertiary education.
“I was living in Nairobi, Kenya at that time and because my parents were there, I was not given the opportunity to be in Ghana to undertake the national service, so, no I did not do national service, I actually worked in Kenya; for the three months that I came out of university…I was not in Ghana at that time,” she explained.

i said i was not going to comment on articles anymore but these us3l3ss group of ple called minority wont let me be. this country would have been better off if we dont have minorities in parliament or in any form of deliberation bcos at the end of the day the majority will have their way. they are just wasting their time. they just want ple to get the attention of ghanaians as if they are doing something. u were not useful when u had majority in parliament so of what use are u now as minority?
The law prevents people who have not done National Service from seeking employment or being employed. Please remember that Otiko and Catherine Afeku did not write any application, did not present any academic certificates to become ministers. They were appointed by the President in the interest of the nation. This makes their appointments not subject to any law. Even the vetting is not supported by any law. In effect they have not sought employment but rather the President used his executive powers to appoint them ministers in the interest of the nation. I advise the MPs to use their time profitably elsewhere
Much ado about nothing
If the government is discerning they should redraw this nomination. There should be no excuse for dodging national service. I guess they are using her to pave the way for their children whom they ship abroad to avoid serving their country. Being made a minister is not serving your country you are treated like a queen.
Speak to the issues without attacking the personalities of the minority group.
So what was the NDC MPs thinking when they approved Oti Bless during Mahama's time, when they knew very well that he had not done National Service. Hypocrites. You people will remain in opposition for decades
sake of what?...i foresee this pple staying in opposition for many many years
