A Progressive People’s Party (PPP) Communicator, Charles Owusu has said that it would be an act of wizardly for anyone to speak against the implementation of the free Senior High School (SHS) programme announced by President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The President speaking at the 60th Anniversary celebration of Okuapeman Secondary School over the weekend announced the government’s intention to roll out the free SHS programme by the beginning of next academic year.
“The government of Ghana will fund the cost of public senior high schools for all those who qualify for entry from the 2017/2018 academic year onwards. Let me take this opportunity to spell out clearly what we intend to do so no one in Ghana is left in any doubt.
“By free SHS we mean that in addition to tuition which is already free, there will be no admission fee, no library fee, no science centre fee, no computer lab fee, no examination fee, and no utility fee; there will be free text books, free boarding and free meals, and day students will get a meal at school for free.” President Akufo-Addo said.
The President said: “Free SHS will also cover agricultural, vocational and technical institutions at the high school level. I also want to state clearly again that we have a well-thought out plan that involves the building of new public senior high schools and cluster public senior high schools”.
This announcement has led to debates on the feasibility of the programme with critics asking the government to come out with the full cost of the programme. Others have also indicated that the government ought to wait to build more infrastructure before implementing the programme.
Commenting on the policy on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Programme Tuesday, Charles Owusu opined that the policy is feasible and hence argued that it would only be ‘witches and wizards’ who would speak against its implementation..
“It is only witches and wizards who would want to speak against such a feasible project, it is about priorities…,” he argued.
He said he could not come to terms with the fact that same people who paid huge judjement debts would think a policy such as free SHS is feasible.
“We take money and organize Ghana@50 etc, SADA, SUBAH etc, it’s all about the will to do whatever we want and we in the PPP believe in free Education from the lower level to SHS…,” he added.
He however called on the Minister of Education to come clean and list the full details of the programme.

MR.CHARLES OWUSU MAY IT BE KNOWN TO YOU THAT THERE ARE NATION WRECKERS,EVIL, AND WICKED PEOPLE IN OUR MIST WHO DO NOT WANT THE PROGRESS OF OTHER PEOPLE OTHER THAN THEIR OWN.GHANA IS A NATION BLESSED IN RICHES BEYOUND OUR WILDEST DREAMS BUT OUT OF GREED AND SELFISHNESS WE ARE ONE OF THE POOREST IN THE SUB SAHARA AFRICA.RAWLINGS IS ESTIMATED TO BE WORTH OVER 50 MILLION DOLLARS,FROM OWING YORKO GARI SELLER TO A MULTI MILLIONAIRE.LOOK AT HIS FRIEND KWESI BOATHWEY HE IS ESTIMATED TO BE WORTH OVER 200 MILLION DOLLARS AND MANY MORE.IF THESE STEALERS WERE TO GIVE BACK TO SOCIETY,WE COULD HAVE FREE EDUCATION UP TO UNIVERSITY LEVEL.AKUFFO ADDO IS DOING HIS BIT WE SHOULD ALL SUPPORT HIM TO DELIVER FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL. WHAT DID RAWLINGS AND MAHAMA GIVE TO THE PEOPLE? ONLY THIEEEVERY AND HARDSHIPS.WE LIVE TO SEE IF THEY ARE GOING TO TAKE ALL WITH THEM WHEN THEY ARE CALLED BY OUR MAKER.ONLY TIME WILL TELL.
Then we are happy to be wizards. Did you have your have basic education from a Sito School? You will understand the magnitude of the problem we are about to create. We can't afford the long term social burden whilst the many could have been spent on retooling the already existing institutions to cope with everything changing world. Whiles we have been trying to encourage good family planning, you encouraging them to think it is OK just to make babies.
Instead of taking time to hear from all ends what it will take to improve the future of our education system in Ghana, our politicians will always think the know all and start to make ***barred word*** comments as above. It is the very rich in society who can afford and send their children to Private school who will end up going to SHS. What happens to the poor boy/girl in the village who cannot even pass the JHS let alone going to SHS to enjoy this "free" stuffs. Idea is good but we all need to think through and give the best to the vulnerables. Why we not ask those who can pay (sons of the Okudjetos, Kennedy Agyepongs, etc.) to just pay something small but offer full scholarship to the struggling ones.
What a mouth? Like a cow's vagi.na.
My brother you have said it all. With free shs, every Ghanaian is going to benefit. All depends on our commitments and priorities. This is one of the best social interventions the government has decided. It is far better than a situation where the monies are channeled into a few politicians pockets and they use the money to build fuel stations, send their children to schools in abroad, build huge buildings for themselves and families, steal our monies and hide them in Dubai and Switzerland, BUY BIG CARS for themselves and families, inflate prices for projects. For this policy, all uncles, fathers, mothers, grandmothers and grand fathers, nieces and nephews, boys and girls will all benefit. Also market women and men, potter or kayayes, farmers and fishermen, office workers and private workers are all going to benefit. So what are we talking about. The problem I have is that, more jobs should be set up and this could be achieved if our technical schools are well established. Introduction of Entrepreneurship courses should be encouraged in our second cycle schools, universities and technical schools
