Former President John Mahama has blamed his defeat in the 2016 election on what he describes as incumbency disadvantage.
According to the former President, while his main opponent, now President Akufo-Addo, was promising everything to secure votes, he as president, was restricted on the kind of promises he could make because he knew the strength of the economy.
“I had an incumbency disadvantage. I knew what the economy could give the people and I told the people the truth that we need more hard work to be able to get out of where we are; my opponent promised heaven and you have the constraints of not being able to promise all the rosy things he was doing. The people made a choice and voted me out” Mr. Mahama said while he addressed a gathering at Durban in South Africa.
He added: ” If he [President Nana Akufo-Addo] is able to deliver on his promises, good; if he is not able too, the people would have learnt that not all that glitters is gold”.
Mr. Mahama also Africans to show interest in how their government manages their resources.
“Every month when I work, part of my salary is taken as tax, so as a citizen I want to be sure that whoever has been elected into government is going to be accountable on how he uses that money to improve my life”.
Mr. Mahama is the first Ghanaian sitting president to have an lost election.

We are tired of you....you want us to pity you or what....try that 2020 thing and you will be humiliated than 2016....npp to cop ndc won't come back now!!!
Isn't he the one who at a point was travelling from one point to another in a helicopter? He's so hollow minded.
Somebody tell this man to ***barred word***!!!!!!!!!!!!! he is the worst thing that happened to Ghana, a curse is a very mild word. The Lord truly loves this country because another four years under this John Ford would have brought hell and a heightened form of Sodom to Ghana.
Was this the John Mahama who was our vice for 4 years and president for 4 years? John Mahama is truly incompetent. What is incumbency disadvantage? Wait for Prof Kwasi Botwey to tell you the true reasons for losing the election. You were corrupt, your appointees were corrupt, you had no vision for our country, health delivery is collapsing, lawlessness was on the increase (you did nothing about galamsey).....the list goes on and on and on...... You were a weak and vision11ess president. Your election lost was good for our country.
What is incumbency disadvantage? You choose words that do not make sense. You had all the state resources at your disposal, you shared funds indiscriminately, your wife went about giving out V8s to John Dumelo and his girlfriends yet you come back to talk about Incumbency Disadvantage. Mr. Ex Prez... I think you are being disingenuous and dishonest to yourself and to Ghana. Didn't your people campaign on your so-called Dubai? Didn't you campaign on roads you claimed to have constructed which have developed man holes in the last three months? Didn't you campaign on CHPS Compounds and Hospitals including the over bloated cost of Ridge Hospital? Didn't you campaign on paying cocoa farmers more than any other government? yet in Akando's constituency, there is nothing to show for it? Didn't you campaign on cocoa roads yet nothing is seen in Ahi's Bodi and Akando's Camp 15 and Eluokrom and its environs? Now with these tell us what you mean by Incumbency Disadvantage? I rest my case. Obi nso ntoa so!!!
SHUTT the HELLL UP 1dd100tt
Incumbency disadvantage indeed. All the state owned V-8s in his convoy were embossed with his posters. For the first time in history, the president had a convoy with state resources campaigning in some part of the country, the vice president with another team somewhere else and the chief of staff with yet another team campaigning elsewhere. All these activities were fully resourced by the state. The vehicles they used, the food the ate, the fuel, allowances and even the monies shared to the electorate to induce them were all from state coffers. Mr president, if you have nothing better to say, just shut the hell up.
I am happy John Mahama and his NDC cohorts still do not understand why they lost the election. That means long time in opposition because once they do not understand why they lost they will not be able to address the issues and come back. Perhaps some clues on why they lost will help them. its important for them to have competent people who understand the impact of macro economic indicators like inflation, currency depreciation, BOG policy rate, value for money, corruption on the life of the ordinary Ghanaian. For example when NDC took over the economy in 2008 a two bedroom self contain that was selling for GHC60,000.00 now sells for GHC252,000.00. When you perpetrate such inflation brutality on your citizens and they vote you out and you dont understand them im sorry for you.
What is imcumbency disadvantage? N.o.n.sense
What about incumbency advantages like more cash, free GBC coverage, bribing of chiefs and other leaders, free use of state assets like helicopters..... This incompetent John Mahama guy was a big set back to our country.
