Former President John Mahama has blamed his defeat in the 2016 election on what he describes as incumbency disadvantage.
According to the former President, while his main opponent, now President Akufo-Addo, was promising everything to secure votes, he as president, was restricted on the kind of promises he could make because he knew the strength of the economy.
“I had an incumbency disadvantage. I knew what the economy could give the people and I told the people the truth that we need more hard work to be able to get out of where we are; my opponent promised heaven and you have the constraints of not being able to promise all the rosy things he was doing. The people made a choice and voted me out” Mr. Mahama said while he addressed a gathering at Durban in South Africa.
He added: ” If he [President Nana Akufo-Addo] is able to deliver on his promises, good; if he is not able too, the people would have learnt that not all that glitters is gold”.
Mr. Mahama also Africans to show interest in how their government manages their resources.
“Every month when I work, part of my salary is taken as tax, so as a citizen I want to be sure that whoever has been elected into government is going to be accountable on how he uses that money to improve my life”.
Mr. Mahama is the first Ghanaian sitting president to have an lost election.

Mr.president, relax because as you said, history will judge you.youve done extremely well during your term in office. Remember what KWAME Nkrumah said when he was overtron.(if i knew that Ghanaians wanted milk i should have turned acosombo dam in to milk for them to maintain me as president.)that should have served you as a lesson. Ghanaians don't need development, they whant food.ignorencess makes it easy for people to accept any promises just like that. Let wait and see because i know that time will tell!
Tell your brother to pay tax but not to steal same tax you are talking about.wicked man
I sometimes feel sad that this ***barred word*** Mahama has once become a president in our dear nation Ghana. This man needs to be caged. He is a ***barred word*** and also highly incompetent. Just look at the way he supervised an economy that was growing at 9.2 without oil in Kufour's time to 3.6 with oil. He really defies an economic principle that says that development is proportional to economic growth. In his case development was inversely proportional to economic growth. He over inflated projects prices and pocketed the excess. He should ***barred word***. Is only in Ghana that we hail mediocrity.
u were incompetent to me and so many ppl. and u said u were a dead livestock. that was how u were sackked
What about the incumbency advantage: national platform, using state resources, flying in helicopter for free, buying media airtime, using MMT buses without paying, etc? Oh! Opana, onaapo!
I think he's always boozed. SO he sees all colors the same. You lost because Ghanaians saw you, your friends and family as THiievves and incompetent.
The incumbency disadvantage includes:you have never been president b4 so you cant talk about presidency issue, wayome, suba, sada, gyeda, bus branding,amari,450million dollar fence wall in Burkina Faso,Isofoton, infilated contract, sharing of vehicles to chiefs and young girls, vulgar language by appointees, using state funds to sponsor other parties to the detriment of your main opponent, bringing foreign agents to cause confusion in your main opponent party, insulting your main contender whenever your appointees gets the opportunity to share their achievement, using state funds to sponsor your party activities just to mention a few.i think you have not waken from your slumber and you still think you are in a comfortable lead thus why you keep on saying all sorts of things.let me inform you we were fed up with your incompetency.
