The government says it has no intention to legalise same-sex relationship, hours after it came under pressure to make public its position on the matter.
Information Minister, Mustapha Hamid told Joy News Monday homosexuality continues to be unacceptable because there is no “cultural orientation” that supports it in Ghana.
Although he admitted a society’s culture could change to reflect modern times, he said same-sex relationship cannot be legalised at the moment.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had told Jane Dutton on Talk to Al Jazeera, legalisation of homosexuality is not on his government's agenda.
But the status of gays in the country could change if there is a groundswell of pressure for that to be done, he said.
“At the moment, I don’t feel, I don’t see that in Ghana there is that strong current of opinion that is saying this is something we need to deal with. It is not so far a matter that is on the agenda,” he said.
Pressure groups, religious organizations and political opponents have taken issues with the president over his comments.

I'm not happy with his comment.....
Oh my beloved country. We keep saying it will not happen. We are in this country when gay Ghanaian got married to a gay. The president is not a gay. Stop being hypocrite, the person next to you may gay. Your business partner both local and international may be Gay. The world is changing so fast with the rise of these act. Morals and standards are gradually fallen. We embrace immoral acts like Ebony, Shatta wale,One Corner dance etc. and are quick to condemn act like Gay's. We are so funny as a people. Let say No to all immoral acts.
the first gentleman didn't say he was gonna legalize gay marriage. he categorically stated that it's not on his agenda and he is a man of his words. even if it does happen then not in his government. let's stop making noise about what comment he made, Nana isn't a gay and if where to give a personal comment on this he would've said it otherwise but on national matters he should deal with it with wisdom such as his. let's focus on ourselves that we don't become gays ourselves who will pressure the legalization of gay marriage.
Our President talks too much. Wisdom are in few words.
what is this thing with it cannot be legalized at the moment? are planning to legalize it some time in the future but not now? or what are u saying? u guys are disappointing me with ur answers and I must be sincere. there will NEVER be any cultural orientation that will support that thing in this country. stop being philosophical and hit the nail on the head. it will never happen in Ghana. well may be in the next world after our might have destroyed this one and allow the devil to build his own.
WELL, YOUR PRESIDENT'S THOUGHTS DID NOT CONVEY SUCH A MESSAGE.
