The Minister for Works and Housing and MP for Abuakwa South constituency, Hon Samuel Atta Akyea has called for a befitting final funeral rites to be organized for the late Dr Joseph Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Danquah who died 54 years ago.
The late statesman died on the 4th of February 1965 in the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons in condemned cell under the regime of Dr Kwame Nwiah Nkrumah.
He said 54 years after his death the final funeral rites of the late JB Danquah has still not been held.
Hon Atta Akyea made the demand in Parliament today(Tuesday) in a statement to mark the 54th Anniversary of the death of Dr. J. B Danquah
He said the late Dr J.B Danquah was incarcerated under the Prevention Detention Act of 1958 passed by the Parliament of the day which conferred unfettered powers on President Nkrumah to imprison anyone in the realm under Executive Instrument for whatever term at his pleasure and without due process.
Hon. Atta Akyea described the late J.B Danquah as a courageous politician, lawyer, journalist, legislator, historian and a pioneer of Ghana's independence whose contribution to the development of the country cannot be erased.
Contributing to the statement, the MP for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour described the contribution of the late JB Danquah to the promotion of education in the country as very remarkable.
In her contribution to the statement also, the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama described the late JB Danquah as a dedicated person who stood, worked and fought for the interest of Ghana and must therefore be honoured.
