The former General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie aka Sir John has said apart from veep Dr. Bawumia, any members of the party who has the ambition of becoming flagbearer after Akufo Addo’s 8-year reign should jettison that aspiration.
The Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyeremanten is highly tipped by political analysts to lead the party after Nana Akufo-Addo.
Alan Kyerematen is a man who has always competed against President Akufo-Addo for the NPP’s flagbearership. In 2008, 2012 and even in 2016 he contested against Nana Addo to become the presidential candidate of the NPP but lost on all occasions.
But Sir John, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission in an interview said the NPP will be doing itself great injustice if another person other than Dr. Bawumia takes over as the party’s flagbearer after President Akufo Addo.
“The NPP is from the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition, Danquah is having his turn at the Presidency being represented by President Akufo Addo, Busia has also had his turn represented by ex-President Kufuor, it is now left with Dombo, where is Dombo? he’ll be represented by Dr. Bawumia when he becomes President. Nobody will dare contest Dr. Bawumia after President Akufo Addo has ended his 8-year rule. There is no argument about this. If the NPP indeed believes in the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition, then that is the way. Look at how the humble S.D Dombo then leader of the Northern Peoples Party (NPP) handed over the leader of the opposition role in Parliament to Dr. Busia when our part only had two seats in Parliament. Dombo certainly needs to be represented and that will be done by Dr. Bawumia.”

well said sir john
@Sir John should stop his "***barred word*** behavior & irrational talk" which has caused his relegation in NPP. Was VP Allidu Mahama mad automatic after President Kuffuor? If No then allow anyone interest to contest. Anyway the same way the Achim Mafias at Jubilee house have relegated VP Bawumiah to the background so shall they work against him for 2024.
Bawumia's Presidency will never happen! He cannot even manage the economy.
Sir John has only hurt Bawumia's chances
But it is not time yet to talk about this Sr.John. Nana/Bawumia and this NPP govt.have work to do.No distractions for now.Let them concentrate on the good work they have started for Ghana.
Obi Ba I agree with you because Bawumia is not doing badly at all as a Vice President. As much as Kyeremanten is also not doing badly, but it would not be a problem for Kojo to come in good terms with Sir John's proposition if it turns out well for the NPP to appeal to the good people of Ghana by virtue of their good performance and competence in governance. I know Kojo is not that of a Person who indispensably seeks to be a President before he can render his genuine good Services to mother Ghana. Kojo had been always hard-working, gentle and human and steadfast in good principles since Adisco days.
I think there is so much thinking in what Sir John is saying. Though democratically it doesn'plink well in the ears. Yet,Party-politic and strategic very expedient, if only the whole Party could agree to settle on that proposition. I hope NPP would take it kindly in good faith and make a party-intern informed conversation about the Sir Johns' loud thoughts.
the Text book Economist. wa b)n fkn
owusu afriyie must stop the confusion he us introducing in the nap. when JAK and impiani attempted to foisteralan on npp, there was rebellion and you played a major part. now you are beginning to suffer dosage so just opening your mouth and putting your toes. no see dry declaration in npp.
Bawumiah will perform worse than Mahama. All he knows doing best is to prepare speeches from textbooks and read it out to Ghanaians. Is he not the one heading the ongoing economy in the country? Left to me alone Bawumiah cannot be the head of a department let alone to be the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana. Sir John should know that having a higher education is entirely different from being a leader. There is no leadership traits in Bawumiah despite his higher education. If I were to be in the shoes of Nana Addo, I will never make any mistake to choose Bawumiah as my Vice come 2020.
