Member of Parliament for Efutu constituency, Hon. Afenyo-Markin is asking the Vice-Chancellor for the University Of Education, Winneba, Rev. Prof. Afful-Broni to forgive those he feels have wronged him and reinstate them to their positions and respectful duties.
He says those sacked lecturers are just being victimized for no apparent reason and that just like the bible says "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us."
Speaking on Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, he is asking the Rev Prof. Afful-Broni who is a Catholic Priest and the Vice-Chancellor at the centre of the UEW impasse to apply the biblical principle of forgiveness and do the needful.
He explained that as an MP he would not want to interfere in the affairs of the university again as that the governing council has taken over.
He will plead with Prof. Afful-Broni to ensure that all scores between those involved in the case are settled.
"You see, he should not also forget that posterity will judge you for the very things you spoke against and you are repeating those things again. However, you should give back those you have rendered jobless their jobs at least for their families to survive," he said.
Some students of the UEW last Monday started a protest at the north campus in Winneba to register their displeasure about the dismissal of some of their lecturers.
The demonstration however turned violent on Thursday, March 14, 2019 when the demonstrating students went on rampage smashing the windows of some buildings and some buses.
The Central Regional Minister, Mr Kwamena Duncan, acting on the advice of the Regional Security Council closed down the Winneba and Ajumako campuses indefinitely.
The Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has stated that due process was followed in the dismissal of some members of staff of the university, including three senior lecturers.
According to the council, every member of staff of the UEW who had been dismissed, suspended or demoted was taken through the due process of the law, in accordance with Schedule of the UEW statutes.
The university dismissed some members of staff and lecturers, which action sparked off student protests, leading to the indefinite closure of the Winneba and the Ajumako campuses of the university.
Media Encounter
Addressing a press conference at the council’s Chamber last Monday night to respond to recent happenings in the university, the Chairman of the council, Professor Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah, said the events that led to the dismissal, termination, demotion or suspension of some staff had been maliciously presented and used as the rationale for the violent attacks on lives and property at the university.
Before addressing the media, members of the governing council and other management members undertook a tour of the North, Central and South campuses of the university in Winneba to ascertain the extent of destruction of facilities and vehicles by rampaging students, the cost of which the council estimates at GH¢250,000.

Rev. Father Afful-Broni does not have the power to reinstate the dismissed lecturers, because it was the governing council that dismissed those lecturers. If they want to be reinstated, they should petition the governing council or go to court to seek redress. I think the MP Mr Afenyo-Markin has a personal problem with the VC. Apart from the fact that the punishment was too harsh, the VC did nothing wrong.
This afenyo guy doesn't learn. After all the brouhaha that he caused with his impunity political interference in the affairs of UEW, he is still talking as one who has the oversight authority of the university. Is it that nobody has advised him? Not even an elder in the NPP??? This is unbelievable!
