The Managing Editor of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Kweku Baako Jnr has joined the lot speaking against the scrapping of 1st July, Republic day usually observed as a public holiday.
July 1 is no longer a public holiday following President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's assent to the Public Holidays (Amendment) Act 2019.
A statement signed and issued by the Minister of Interior, Mr. Ambrose Dery on Wednesday, May 8 announced that President Akufo-Addo assented to the new Act on April 16, 2019.
"The President of Republic of Ghana, His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assented to the Public Holidays (Amendment) Act 2019, (Act 986) on 16th April 2019," it said.
However, this has been opposed by a lot of people.
According to Kweku Baako, the thought that went into making the changes is poor and that it has reduced the significance of the day.
"There was a poverty of thought . . . I have been trying to understand it; the poverty of thought was amazing . . . I can't vote for that," he indicated during a panel discussion on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo'.
Watch the video below to learn the history of July 1st and understand why Kweku Baako thinks it is a bad idea to make it commemorative.

Ghana is not serious all. You don't come and scrap a public holidays that have been observed for years. I have been in America for 12 years, no holiday have been added or subtracted. I don't what is wrong with this administration. Only one term for you.
When Potent Leaders are building Brand New Legon Medical Hospital, Ridge Hospital, Brand New Secondary Schools E blocks, Brand new Power Plants, Brand New Circle Dubai for to the benefits all Ghanaians, Gratifying to note that The INCOMPETENT and IMPOTENT LEADERS are building Cathedral, and Parliament House and EmPloying Over 140 impotent Ministers as parasitic being on my tax Money. Clandestinely and dupiously attempted to buy bloated Oslo Chancery/embassy. For the records the said loan for the 450 parliament house is coming from India, nokofio, Papa Ajasco as a speaker is working something small for the son as ambassador in India. #vote against Impotent leadership.
Your line of argument is poor and one of a shallow mind! When the 1st republic was over thrown, was the our freedom of the republic attained overthrown or taken back or reversed by our colonial masters? Yes the first repblic was over thrown but we still got to keep our sovereignty as a state....so what is wrong to remind us of the day and also keep our generations informed for our identity and history to be in tact? Let us not blindly argue because of politics...at the end of the day, we are and will forever remain Ghanaians!
The 1st Republic is extinct with the 24th February Coup so why should we continue celebrating something which is dead and does not exist any longer. Just as we celebrate Kwame Nkrumah's birthday. Why do we celebrate the birthday of a dead person? Productivity is key to development and not celebrating the dead and dead events. Why do we celebrate the 1st and not the 2nd and 3rd Republic Days?
Your guys are POOR, and you work only one shift. You work haphazardly. Your Saturdays are permanent Easter days, and Sundays are Christmas days. Your work schedules are comme si commme ca. What would you be doing on holidays?
hypocrites where were you when NDC minority was shouting all over. your conscience will judge you
