Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has reminded former President John Mahama that the economy he superintended between 2012 and 2016 was so fragile that he couldn’t even mitigate and cushion people from an internally created problem like dumsor.
The former President last week claimed the economy under the leadership of Nana Akufo-Addo is weak and has been exposed in just one month by the Coronavirus pandemic, which has affected several countries around the world.
Speaking to journalists at the Jubilee House on the sideline of a Covid-19 meeting on Monday, Vice President Bawumia wondered how a former President whose administration and economy could not handle dumsor for four years would be making comparisons with a global pandemic like the Coronavirus.
“If you want to test the robustness of an economy, you test it in a time of crises. Thankfully, we have had two crises. Under the NDC, it was an internally-generated crisis, which was dumsor. Under the Presidency of Nana Akufo-Addo, there has been an externally generated crisis, which has been the global Coronavirus pandemic.”
“I just want you to ask yourself, how have these two crises been managed? The dumsor crisis which crippled this economy for four years. What were the mitigating measures offered to businesses and individuals during the dumsor, an internally generated crisis?” the Vice President asked.
“We saw that even during dumsor, electricity prices were being increased, fuel prices were being increased, teacher trainee allowances were being cancelled, nursing trainee training allowances were being cancelled. All of that was happening during that particular crisis.”
“You look at the Coronavirus crisis and you look at the difference in terms of what has happened. The President has reduced electricity prices and has made it free for lifeline consumers. He has given free water to all Ghanaians for three months, has made sure that there is a stimulus package of 600 million Ghana Cedis for businesses and we have seen domestic production of PPEs (personal protective equipment) for our health workers locally.”
Having laid bare the differences between the fragile economy under John Mahama which he said couldn’t ameliorate the suffering of Ghanaians and businesses for four years, and the robust economy under Akufo-Addo which he said has taken mitigating measures to cushion Ghanaians despite the effects of the virus on the economy, Dr. Bawumia was emphatic in proclaiming who Ghanaians would trust in times of crisis.
“So the difference couldn’t be more stark between the the leadership under a crisis under dumsor and that under the Coronavirus epidemic. So I ask a simple question, who will you trust in a time of crisis?
“The answer, I will say, is very very clear. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has shown leadership and concern for ordinary Ghanaians.”

You can take it or leave it. Like him or loathe him Dr Bawumia has really come of age not only in government but politicking as well. He can address the intellectuals intellectually in economics and speak to the masses in a layman's economics. Just listen to the way he explained and went down to demonstrate in twi about how a husband and ex performance in marriage. I don't even know he has a reasonable over the twi language.
The Vice President always talk like a serial caller if Mahama is bad at all he has build hospital and we are all using it. He talks like Rawlings and Kuffour did not do anything at all. December 7 is here and we are going to see.People are crying for life and you are talking like you can buy a person look at you.
In the views of Bernard Avle and his friends at Joy Fm, it is wrong for Bawumia to do politics in the COVID-19 Pandemic. But failed to condemn Mahama and Ndc politics. We supposed to fight the common enemy together but if you have opposition doing propaganda and misinform the people about the fight how can we succeed
My friend, we mean business on this platform. Don't come here and displaying your childish behavior. AIRBUS is with Martin Amidu he should come out with his verdict in anyone has done wrong. There are many reasonable NPP folks but most of them too are so ***barred word*** like you.
I have observe something about barwumia, he thinks most Ghanaians are not logically sound so he can say anything and get away with. How on earth can you even compare a pandemic to dumsor? Dumsor is a problem that was with Ghana because of insufficient power plants. But before John Mahama lost power, he had brought additional power plants and Karpower to increase the nation's power capacity which you have inherited and for that matter dumsor off the table. In this pandemic you have gone for money from both the IMF and World Bank, companies have contributed funds into COVID 19 funds, individuals have done same, you have taken money from stabilization fund and contingency fund etc, yet you couldn't provide food for just three weeks to the needy for them to stay home, and has lifted the lockdown which has made the disease numbers still increasing. If Mahama had half of COVID 19 contributions during the time of dumsor the whole Ghana could have been sprayed with infrastructure and electricity power capacity.
Well we are not going to fly on AIRBUS with an incompetent pilot through DUMSO to IMF anymore when little BABIES👶 WITH SHARP TEETH 🦷 are on board and land us on WOYOMEY’S backyard. I know there could be FORD EXPEDITION to take us by land but we would have preferred to take BUS 🚌 BRANDING driven by ATIVOR in the middle of BERKO POWER BRIBERY CRISIS that’s why I decree like the Jews said never again to ndc and their INCOMPETENT NICE MAN. NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU
Herr, the political war has began. When Bawumia starts to counter Mahama I know what happens. I love this VEEP. He has the heart to reveal Mahama's weakness economically. And this is NDC's worry. When this war started in 2016, Ghanaians chose Bawumia's party over Mahama with over a million vote in the elections. My advice to Mahama is to keep mute if he wants to win the election for there is Bawumia factor which can lead to his second defeat.
You mean Mahama is no longer part of Ghana's ka bi men ka bi (democracy) you can express your views but he should ***barred word***?
Hit nail right on the head VEEP, Ghanaians should not listen to NDC Propaganda.
Why cant you leave the ex president alone and concerntrate on what you will do mr talk more and do little?? You have been talking about him since day 1 and you guys have been in power for over three years now. Are you guys not ashamed of naming toilets as your achievment as government in power. Ghanaians must wake up.. God bless our homeland Ghana!
