The Majority Leader and MP for Suame constituency, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has said the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy ) Act came into operation upon the giving of accent to the bill by the President after its passage by the House.
He explained that structures are being put in place by government towards actual collection of the levy scheduled to commence on 1st May 2022, and preparation towards the collection of the levy forms part of the operationalization of the E-levy Act.
The Majority Leader stated this today at a press conference held by the Majority caucus in Parliament.
He said the E-levy bill was approved by Parliament by a voice vote hence the burden lies on the Minority caucus to prove to the Supreme Court that the approval of the bill by Parliament was illegal.
It would be recalled that the Minority in Parliament recently filed a writ at the Supreme Court seeking to place injunction on the implementation of the E-levy Act.
The Majority Leader therefore said the decision by the Minority to challenge the legality of the approval of the E-levy by Parliament will be an exercise in futility.
Commenting on the referral of three Members of Parliament by the Speaker, Rt Hon Alban Bagbin to the Privileges Committee of Parliament for absenting themselves from Parliament for 15 sitting days, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said the recommendations of the Committee on the matter must hold without the need for the whole House to vote on the Committee's recommendations as suggested by the Speaker.
