Former President John Mahama says "a new National Democratic Congress Government, God willing and with the votes of the sovereign people of Ghana – in 2025 – will repeal the E-Levy Act.”
The controversial Electronic Transactions Levy which started on Sunday, 1st May 2022, has been strongly opposed by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Meanwhile, the Minority Leader in Parliament Haruna Idrissu and two NDC MPs have urged the Supreme Court to block the implementation of the e-levy.
The case is expected to be heard on Wednesday, May 4.
Delivering an address titled “Ghana at Crossroad” on Monday, May 2 Mahama said: “we in the NDC do not oppose taxation as a principle. We will not be pretentious and couch fanciful slogans to condemn the principle of taxation like the NPP did in the past. We are, however, implacably opposed to distortionary and burdensome taxes like the e-levy that only force Ghanaians to endure more suffering".
Mahama has also asked President Akufo-Addo to sack the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.
“It is inconceivable that the Minister of Finance still remains at post,” Mahama said, adding he must be sacked “without delay”.

Ghanas current economic crises and hardships has been caused by the dubious private transactions and bussiness of the finance minister Hon. Ken Ofori - Atta. Per using his private bussines with his cronies along side the national economic transactions has brought a turbelance economic crises for the country. Ghanas president Nana Akufo - Addo is very much aware of the heavy predicament and woes what his finance minister has mismanaged Ghanas economy. His double dealings: his private bussines groups and the national economic transactions. His prefernce was his private bussines and profiting from Ghanas economic transactions. if it was in one of the advanced countries, like U.K. Germany, France, Nertherlands etc, Ken Ofori -Atta would have been jailed, simply, his dubious financial dealing and profiting at the expence of Ghanas economy. His selfish private economic interest, rather than the national economic interest. in Ghana, the party in power, such as the current Akufo-Addos Bawumias leadership covers and protect all forms of corruption and corrupt practices in the country, hence minister of finance cannot be sacked or jaield. a change of goverment and party colours is yet to come and but its very obvious that the next government 2025, will drag the current finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta to court and will not be far from Nsawam Prisons.
You are right, Ohemaa-Ba. Clearly, we don't progress with that attitude of not learning from our challenges and resolving them as we move forward. It's sadly the NDC that would think otherwise.
A trickster and backward-looking man!
Based on previous bad experiences, any rational person would believe that the E-levy is preferable to going to the IMF for a $500 million bailout, which would come with a slew of stringent measures that would make Ghanaians' lives unbearable. This is the first time a government has sought to raise its own money by expanding the tax net through the virtues of new technology and digitalization. The people of Ghana fully embrace doing away with the folly of doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Mr Mahama,E-levy will rather end your political carrier in 2025
This Mahama guy is a trickster.... liar.
I'm happy Dr. Bawumia has set the bar for national conversation high, so he's done well for taking such a decent platform to spew his propaganda and mischiefs, albeit insults and character assassinations...however, not a single data/fact was heard, it seems NDC is still not ready as credible alternative, he missed grand opportunity to sell some well package policies and ideas to Ghanaians...
Give him the mandate and he will turn back and tell you because we need money for development, E-levy must be sustained to mobilise money. Mideocre of a trickster you want to take Ghanaians for fooools again.
why didn't you sack Seth Terkpey when Ghana was in darkness for most part of your years as president? hypocrisy at its best and always belittling the minds of Ghanaians and thinking we have short memories. the sakawa promises of a desperate Mahama and the NDC has started such as they did in 2008 and we bought into it and voted for them. NDC wasted everybody's time from 2009 to 2016. what single policy did you bring up as a government.
JDM your reasoning is exceptionally weak
