A lecturer at the Political Science department of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Amoako Baah has described the involvement of Nigerian celebrities in Ghana’s political campaigns as inappropriate.
With few days to the general elections, the political climate has heated up and some Nigerian celebrities have been spotted campaigning for the two major political parties in diverse ways, abrantepa.com can state.
Actor, Nkem Owoh, known in showbiz as Osuofia, has featured in a National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign advert while publisher and businessman, Chief Dele Momodu has indicated that President John Mahama deserves praise for his good works across Ghana.
Photos of actor, Hanks Anuku clad in the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) paraphernalia surfaced online and he subsequently predicted a win for the party’s presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo.
Speaking on the issue on Radio Univers’ mid-morning show, Brunch2Lunch, Monday, Dr. Amoako Baah said it is unfortunate for such an incident to happen in Ghana’s political history.
He said the development seems to suggest that Ghanaians do not know what is happening in their own country.
“It is not appropriate for foreigners to get actively involved in Ghanaian politics. They are not supposed to give money, they are not supposed to get directly involved,” he said.
Asked if perhaps their involvement is as a result of businesses they have established in Ghana and the conviction that a particular party would make the economy better was not a tangible reason, Dr. Amoako Baah answered in the negative.
“No matter how long you have lived here, you are still not a Ghanaian. If you think you have lived here and the country is important to you, become a citizen. How do we know what you are saying is true? How do we know you’re not being bribed and that when things get worse, you will pack your bags and leave? Do you think Ghanaians can go to Nigeria, on their national television and tell who they should vote for” he queried.
On whether their involvement would influence voters, the lecturer doubted.

Show NDC has LOST the battle at home. Can all every comedian from Nigeria to come support your 419 activities but still CHANGE IS COMING!
my word, I weep at your ignorance.. I hope you know GNPC under the manage of Tsatsu Tsikata started prospecting for oil, during the Rawlings era. This culminated in the finding of commercial quantities. Bui I hope you know was started by Nkrumah, whose developmental drive was truncated by the UP tradition, with help from the CIA. Prez Kufuor took it up and it was completed by the Mills administration. Please try not to belittle and deride the NDC's push for development. That has been the bane of our politics where projects and policies were discontinued, leading to a stagnation of dev. Every govt does its bit, some more so than others. Will Mahama take the infrastructure home on leaving office? no... any which way, Ghana wins....ohh and by the way, I hope you know the circle interchange was done by Brazilians, not the Chinese.
The lecturer is right, Ghanaians must decide for themselves and not foreigners. Which Ghanaian can go to their country and do this.. Sometimes we need to wise up. This does not call for insults.
@Kojo Adai. You will face this same insult one day in life. He just said something that is in the interest of Ghana and its citizens; he never stepped on the toes of just one political party. Mahama will not even be happy with you.
Now let's run a little exercise & brainstorm. Nkrumah ruled for 15yrs. NPP had 8yrs. NDC have got 27yrs. Both NDC & Nkrumah inherited a very good economy to take of. Compared to d : Highly Indebted & Poor one NPP had to take of. Nkrumah built - Akosombo Dam. NPP - Bui Dam. NDC - Nothing. Nkrumah - Tema motorway. NPP - N1 Highway NDC - Nothing. NPP - 8 interchanges made in good quality NDC - 2 uncompleted china metalic interchanges Nkrumah - 2stadia NPP - 3new & renovated already existing 2. NDC - Just one & d@ was even a gift from d Chinese government. Under both Nkrumah & NPP, Ghana's economy was good enough to have successfully hosted d Africa Cup of Nations. NDC cld only achieve co-hosting rights & capacity with Nigeria. NPP had successfully implemented a lot of social intervention programs. Discovered crude oil & gas in commercial quantities. Putting Ghana on d map as an Oil Producing & Exporting Country. So I beg of u all not to settle for anything less 🙏. To whom much is given, much is expected.
@kojo Adai, people like u are rather mad n uuseless not a lecturer..
yes chief dele n osofia, this is unacceptable.. that ovation man is too desperate. what does he wants, he run away from nigeria bcos of corrupt pratices n he has linked up with the corrupt leader (prez. mahama), Ghana we are doomed..
Its better we use them than using mad men calling themselves lecturers.
