A late dramatic strike by Asamoah Gyan offered Ghana hope as the Black Stars clinched a 1-0 win over Algeria in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations tie in Mongomo, Equatorial Guinea on Friday.
Gyan, returning to the squad following a bout of malaria that kept him out of the opener of the Black Stars campaign struck a dramatic late winner to keep alive Ghanas hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.
Gyan latched onto a desperate long ball from Mubarak Wakaso, raced deep into the Algerians final third and angled in a drive in stoppage time to produce Ghanas first points in two games.
In a game of few chances, Algeria looked to be on their way to a comfortable progress having amassed three points in their Group C opener with South Africa.
The North Africans missed the only other clear chance when Nabil Bentaleb from 12 yards side-footed wide on 20 minutes with Ghanas goalkeeper Razak Braimah well compromised.
Desperately needing a win to revive her campaign in a game that looked set to remain goalless, the Black Stars appeared set to slip to the brink of elimination before Gyan darted onto a long ball from the middle and squeezed one past Rais Mbolhi.
The results means Ghana has moved level with Algeria and Senegal at the top of Group C with Senegal set to play South Africa later on Friday.
