The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Wa West, Mr Peter Lanchene Toobu says the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) must be proactive to ensure its officers are protected in their line of duty.
He claimed the service is not doing much for its officers on the country’s various borders – leaving their fate to themselves while protecting the country.
His comment comes after a statement from the Ghana Immigration Service appealing to persons who can provide information leading to the arrest of the murderers of one of its officers, AICO I Michael Otu.
The Immigration Officer was shot dead at Kokoligu, a village between Nandom and Hamile in the Upper West Region.
The service statement said, “While we call for calm, together with the Defense Intelligence and Police, all efforts in the pursuit of the perpetrators cum their modus operandi behind the callous killing of this selfless Patriot is a necessity."
“We call on anyone with positive leads to volunteer same in order to allow justice to take its own course.”
It added: “We shall leave no stone unturned in pursuit of the perpetrators of this barbaric incident. They may run but they can't hide!”
But the Wa West lawmaker seems not to be happy with the service operation in his constituency.
“What are they doing to protect their officers?” he questioned.
Adding that, “their statement is just English. ‘We shall leave no stone unturned is a hard language, my brother, hard language doesn’t bring back life.”
“It doesn’t change the situation. We need to learn from it. It’s a misconduct and leadership failure and some must be held accountable for it. The immigration service should make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

I bet the Wa MP spoke patois or was it Chinese? He also spoke the same English He did not give any suggestion on how to curb this. Blaming the heads of GIS is something I can equally do it does not take much effort.
Well said, but the Wa west MP being a retired police officer failed to mention what the standard practice is when it comes to patrols. Why was the deceased officer alone on patrol duties at that time of the night. Am not a security person but i see security personnel in groups of 3 or more on patrol duties. The immigration service must come clear on this. At least if they were two or 3 one would have escaped to tell us what actually happened. It is even more sad to learn that KOKOLIGU where the unfortunate incident happened is the village from which the interior minister hails from. In that part of the country people are afraid to volunteer information even if they have some hints, resson being that they don't have confidence in the judges and police. The community is some 10 minutes drive to the black Volta river and you cross into Burkina Faso so smugglers use these routes for their illegal activities and any resistance on the part of the immigration officer might have put him in danger resulting in him losing his life. It's also possible the perpetrators could be burkinabe nationals and once they cross the river into their country, it may be difficult to get them. May the soul of my younger brother rest in peace. Gone too soon in an attempt to serve his country. People make sacrifices risking their lives for Ghana only for some greedy so called politicians who do nothing at all apart looking for every possible means to create, loot and share. This matter must be investigated for A-Z.
